Clasping Twisted Stalk
aka Clasping-leaved Twisted Stalk, Cucumber Root, White Mandarin. Handsome large oval to elliptic leaves, up to 4″ (10 cm) long, clasp the 1′ – 3′ stems at each angular bend. Look under the leaves to see the dangling flower bells with their distinctive “kink” in thier slender stems which grow from the axil of each of the upper leaves (see stem detail). The small wide-open (recurved) bell flowers are greenish and become orange-red oval berries. Widepread but not common; found in forests especially wet areas to 4,000′ elevation.
