Hieracium scouleri

Hound's-Tongue Hawkweed

Hound's-Tongue Hawkweed
aka Hieracium cynoglossoide. The genus Hieracium is a very large one with over 800 recognized species. There are seven found in the Park sometimes making identification difficult; H. scouleri seemed to be closest (at least for now!). The flowerheads are yellow and are about 0.75″ (1.5 cm) wide. Stems rise to 1′ – 2′. The leaves are a distinguishing characteristic: the lower leaves are oblong, tapered at the base with stalks, upper leaves are smaller and not stalked. Infrequent, found more in the northeast part of the Park (the case here).
