Magenta Paintbrush
aka Rosy Paintbrush, Small-flowered Paintbrush. The “brush” of the paintbrush is not the flower but the colored “petals” are actually bracts which shelter the true blooms. The lower leaves on stems 6″ – 12″ (15 – 30 cm) are green and with 3 – 5 lobes similar to the bracts. Fold back the the bracts to expose the true flowers which are pale yellowish-green tubes. The most abundant of the five species of Castilleja found in the Park glorifying its meadows above 5,000′ elevation.
