Viola palustris

Marsh Violet

Marsh Violet
True to its name the featured flower was found popping out of about three inches of water along the shore of Green Lake. With almost a saddened look the solitary little flower, about 3/8″ (8 – 12 mm), droops from its stem. Like other violets its lower petal is larger with more pronounced purple viens. The heart-shaped leaves raise on a separate stem. Common but a little hard to find, obviously in very wet places, below 5,000′ elevation.
