Trifolium pratense

Red Clover

Red Clover
The common name ‘clover’ is from the Latin ‘clava’ which means club and refers to the leaf shape which resembles the familiar “club” of playing cards. Along with White Clover it is an introduced species. A dense flower head, about 1″ (2 cm) across, of bright red-pink flowers sits atop erect stems which grow from 6″ to as much as 24″ in height. Unlike the White Clover leaves form immediately below the flower head. Usually found along roadsides, grassy areas to about 4500′ elevation.
