Polemonium californicum

Showy Jacob's Ladder

Showy Jacob's Ladder
aka Low Jacob’s Ladder, Moving Polemonium. Surprisedly this lovely plant puts out a unpleasant ordor! Nevertheless it is very pleasant to look at with beautiful blue flowers with five wide-spreading cupped petals, yellow centers and five white protruding stamens. Spreading stems up to 1′ (30 cm) long support small (1″) leaflets in ten to fifteen pairs which form a ladder type pattern. Usually found to about 6,000′ elevation; at higher elevations the splendid Elegant Jacob’s Ladder, P. elegans, dominates.
