Arnica ovata

Sticky Arnica

Sticky Arnica
aka Sticky-leaf Arnica. After awhile all arnicas begin to look the same so finding disguishing features is key. Here the flowerheads have fewer disk flowers and beneath the ray flowers the involucre has pointed bracts and is very glanular, thus “sticky.” Solitary stems rise to as much as 16″ (40 cm). Stem leaves are interesting in that they are in pairs (3 – 4) and are a variety of shapes including ovate, deltoid or elliptic with the middle ones the largest. Found in rocky places in the subalpine zone and perhaps in the lower alpine zone.

Family:

Asteraceae - SUNFLOWER FAMILY, ASTER FAMILY (Compositae)

Genus:

Arnica derived from Greek arnaovatakis, a 'lamb's skin'

Species:

ovata indicates that leaves or some other feature are 'ovate-shaped'
