Rubus parviflorus

Thimbleberry

Thimbleberry
aka Rubus nutkanus. The species name is somewhat misleading in that the flower is relatively large, up to 2″ (5 cm) across. The beautiful blossum has five petals which appear fragile and crinkled like muslim paper. The shrub can grow to 10′ but along trials it appears to be about half that. The berries become bright red and because they are coarse and seedy native peoples usually dried them. Common in open places along trials, roadsides, avalanche chutes, etc. up to about 4,000′ elevation.
