Veronica serpyllfolia

Thyme-leaf Speedwell

Thyme-leaf Speedwell
There are two sub-species found in the Park: ssp. humifusa, a native perennial and the likely candidate here, and ssp. serpyllifolia, which is an introduced plant and considered a weed. Typically the ssp. humifusa would have bright blue flowers vs. more pale or whittish ones for the serpyllifolia. Stems reach 1′ (30 cm) with opposite elliptic to egg-shaped leaves. Considered uncommon, when found in open places in woods and along trials, and in wetter areas as the case here.

Plantaginaceae - PLANTAIN FAMILY

Genus:

Veronica after Saint Veronica, vericonica, 'the true likeness'
