Western Serviceberry

Western Serviceberry
aka Saskatoon, Shadbush. This common shrub, from 3′ – 15′ (1 – 5 m) tall produces unique showy flowers. The flowers are in loose racemes at the ends of the branches. The five slender white petals, 0.5″ – 0.75″ long, spread wide, curl, or are otherwise twisted to form a pleasant confused looking blossom. Produces a dark blue edible berry (actually an applelike pome). The deciduous leaves are oval and up to 2″ long. The entire plant is a favorite food of large animals. Fairly common along forest edge, trails, streams to 5,500′ elevation.
